The Story Behind the Art
Vincent van Gogh's Wheat Field with Cypresses (1889) was born from his deep connection to the landscapes of Saint-Rémy. He saw the towering cypress trees as symbols of eternity and the golden wheat as a sign of nature's vibrant energy. Known for its bold colors and swirling patterns, this masterpiece is a testament to Van Gogh's unique ability to turn a simple landscape into a powerful emotional experience.
A Unique Perspective on Van Gogh
Our micro-mosaic recreation offers a distinctive way to experience this classic scene. We have translated Van Gogh’s famous "impasto" style—his thick, sculptural paint application—into thousands of hand-cut Smalti glass elements. The result is a stunningly textured, three-dimensional piece that captures the movement of the wind through the wheat and the depth of the Provencal sky.
Hand-Cut Smalti Glass
We use authentic Venetian Smalti glass, a material prized for centuries for its deep, saturated tones and its ability to maintain color purity. Rather than using standard tiles, our artisans work with specialized glass threads, hand-cutting each one into pieces of similar size to achieve the organic texture required for this intricate composition. Every single piece is placed by hand, ensuring that the energy and brilliance of the original painting are preserved in a medium that holds the golden light of eternity
Product Highlights
Hand-Cut Detail: Every micro-pixel is cut and placed by hand to recreate the iconic flow of the cypress trees and clouds.
Dynamic Light & Color: Smalti glass has a unique depth. As the light in your room changes throughout the day, the gold and emerald tones of the mosaic shift and shimmer.
Textured Surface: The mosaic is intentionally tactile, mimicking the physical "raised" feel of Van Gogh's original brushwork.
Lasting Vibrancy: While canvases can age and fade, this glass mosaic is a permanent work of art designed to stay vibrant for a lifetime.
"The cypresses are always occupying my thoughts... it is as beautiful in line and proportion as an Egyptian obelisk." — Vincent van Gogh
