The Story Behind the Art

Vincent van Gogh painted The Church in Auvers-sur-Oise (1890) during the final months of his life. This striking composition captures the Gothic architecture of the village church set against a deep cobalt sky. The paths forking around the building and the energetic, swirling sky reflect the psychological intensity of Van Gogh's late period. It remains a powerful expression of his ability to imbue physical structures with profound emotional depth through a bold exploration of color.

A Unique Perspective on Van Gogh

Our micro-mosaic recreation brings this classic work into a new dimension. We have translated Van Gogh’s famous "impasto" style—his thick, sculptural paint application—into thousands of hand-cut Smalti glass elements. The result is a beautifully textured, three-dimensional piece that captures the imposing presence of the church and the depth of the Auvers sky through the unique properties of glass.

Hand-Cut Smalti Glass

We use authentic Venetian Smalti glass, a material prized for centuries for its deep, saturated tones and its ability to maintain color purity. Rather than using standard tiles, our artisans work with specialized glass threads, hand-cutting each one into pieces of similar size to achieve the organic texture required for this intricate composition. Every element is set by hand, ensuring that the striking architectural presence and deep emotional resonance of this scene are preserved in a glass medium that retains its bold, structural power forever.

Product Highlights

Hand-Cut Detail: Each micro-pixel is hand-cut and placed to recreate the Gothic arches, the dark cobalt sky, and the winding paths of the Auvers church.

Dynamic Light & Color: The Smalti glass provides an intensity of color that is exceptionally bold. The deep blues and sun-baked stone hues remain striking and constant.

Textural Brilliance: The mosaic is intentionally tactile, reflecting the energy of Van Gogh's brushwork and providing a rich, physical connection to the art.

Lasting Vibrancy: Crafted from high-quality Smalti glass, this mosaic is a permanent installation of fine art, designed to remain colorful and vibrant for generations.

"Once more I am back again... I have a larger picture of the village church — an effect in which the building appears to be purplish against a sky of deep and simple blue..."Vincent van Gogh
